Luxury hotel booking programs, side by side
Nine programs add breakfast, a credit and upgrade priority to a stay at the hotel’s normal rate. Three come with a credit card. The rest come through a travel advisor and cost the guest nothing.

Which one to use
If a hotel group has its own advisor program, its guests usually come first for upgrades at that group’s hotels, ahead of Virtuoso and the card programs. A card program wins when its statement credit is larger than the difference, or when you need the guaranteed 4 pm checkout that only Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts writes down. Put your own numbers in the calculator.
Advisor rates at chain hotels still earn points and elite nights. Rates booked through a card’s travel site may not, so ask before relying on it.
